	Abstract:	Bobbie Brooks, Inc. was founded in 1939 as Ritmore Sportswear in Cleveland, Ohio. Its founders were Maurice Saltzman and Max Reiter. In 1953, Saltzman bought out Reiter's share of the company. The name was changed to Bobbie Brooks in 1960. The company merged with Pubco Corporation in 1985. The collection consists of annual reports, brochures, newspaper clippings, company newsletters, awards, and a payroll ledger. The newsletters provide contemporaneous descriptions of pioneering use of computers to track and coordinate production, sales, shipping, and accounting.

	Abstract:	Samuel Goldhamer was the first director of the Jewish Welfare Federation in Cleveland, Ohio, the organization later known as the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. He directed the Federation of Jewish Charities beginning in 1907, overseeing its 1926 transformation from a primarily charitable organization into a social, cultural, spiritual, and philanthropic agency. Goldhamer's son, Walter, was an engineer and business executive who served as chairman of the Cleveland-based Superior Die Casting. He was known for his prizewinning designs, including an optical mount die used in some Kodak Super 8 projectors in the 1960's. The collection consists of certificates, correspondence, a genealogical chart, and newspaper clippings.

	Abstract:	Odette Valabregue Wurzburger was a French resistance fighter during World War II, a lawyer and teacher, and an active community leader, especially in the arts. She was born in Avignon, France, in 1909, and she died in Cleveland in 2006. Her husband, Paul Wurzburger was an entrepreneur, inventor, patron of the arts, and honorary consul of France. He was born in 1904 in Lyon, France, and died in 1974 in Cleveland. He entered the United States in 1941 and became a citizen in 1946. He became honorary consul of France in Cleveland in 1962. Paul's father, Hugo Wurzburger, was born in 1887 in Heilbronn, Germany, and died in Cleveland in 1952. Paul's mother, Marguerite Bacharach Wurzburger, was born in Lyon, France, in 1882 and died in Cleveland in 1967. The couple escaped Nazi-occupied France in 1941 and went first to Cuba, arriving in the United States in August 1942. Hugo Wurzburger was a successful industrialist and inventor. He invented several synthetic fabrics and also manufactured pipe fittings, the patents for which were licensed to Cleveland's Weatherhead Company before World War II. Paul's first wife, Margarethe (later Marguerite) Wolf (1900-1976), was born in Germany and died in Cleveland. The couple lived in Liechtenstein in the early 1930s and came to the United States in 1941, where he continued his father's association with the Weatherhead Company. With degrees from universities in Strasbourg and Frankfort, Paul Wurzburger held patents for various valves in the United States, Canada, Germany, Holland, Great Britain, Australia, Japan, France, Sweden, Italy and Belgium. Throughout his career as an engineer, he was associated with three different firms: Ermeto, Flomet, and Patex. Among other activities, Paul Wurzburger was a trustee for the Salk Institute of Biological Studies and the Musical Arts Association. He was Vice-President of the Federation of French Alliances in the United States for the Central States and chairman of the board of Maison Francaise de Cleveland. He was also on the Case Western Reserve University Board of Overseers and a commander in the French Legion d'honneur. Odette Valabregue earned a law degree from the University of Montpellier in 1930 and was a judge in France prior to the German occupation. As part of her legal career in pre-war France, she was a strong advocate of social services for children. From 1943 to 1945 she was a volunteer in the French underground, saving the lives of many Jews, including her own parents. Her pseudonym during her work with the French resistance was Anne-Marie; under this name, she published a brief account of her experiences during and immediately after the war. This account appeared in French in 1945, as a chapter in a book edited by Suzanne Normand, Liberte Ship (Paris: Editions NAGEL, 1945). Odette Valabregue came to the United States in 1960 when she married Paul Wurzburger, after his divorce from Marguerite (Wolf) Wurzburger. Odette Wurzburger continued her professional activities in Cleveland and became an active member of the community. A member of the American Bar Association, she taught classes for the Case Western Reserve University School of Law and was an adjunct professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego. She spoke often on law and biology and the human genome. Her interests in music and art led to significant achievements, especially her idea for an international piano competition, eventually known as the Cleveland International Piano Competition. She was on the boards of the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art and actively involved in fostering Franco-American relations through her work with the Maison Francaise and the Cleveland Council of World Affairs. She was a member of Suburban Temple-Kol Ami and a generous donor to the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. The collection consists of articles, affidavits, applications, certificates, correspondence, identification cards, invitation, license agreements, lists, memoirs, newspaper clippings, notes, patents, receipts, tickets, and visas.

	Abstract:	Manuel Levine (1881-1939) was a Russian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1897 and became a lawyer and judge, rising to the position of Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals of Ohio. Levine was also interested in the preparation of the immigrant for citizenship and was president of the Cleveland Immigration League. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches by and about Levine, reports, legal documents, financial records such as receipts and bills of sale, photocopies of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, and copies of miscellaneous newspaper clippings, most of which relate to Judge Levine's career or to developments in the legal profession during the 1920s and 1930s.

	Abstract:	Max Apple (b. 1897) was a Cleveland, Ohi,o collector of Jewish memorabilia who retired from his paint and wallpaper business to devote his time to Jewish affairs and to the raising of funds for Israel. He was active in many Jewish charities, including the Histadrut Campaign. He and his wife founded a children's home at Gan Yavne, Israel in 1949 and have created scholarships at several universities. The collection consists of correspondence (1951-1971), certificates (1953 and 1954), World War II ration books, announcements and programs (1941-1971), newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials.

48	Title:	Eleanor Rosenfeld Gerson Family Papers

	Abstract:	Eleanor Rosenfeld Gerson continued her family's tradition of activism in Jewish and other educational, philanthropic, and social service organizations in Cleveland, Ohio. She served as a trustee and chairperson of the School on Magnolia, an alternative school, from 1973-1982. In 1985 the school was renamed the Eleanor Gerson School. Other organizations she was active in included the American Civil Liberties Union of Greater Cleveland, the Women's Community Foundation, the Jewish Family Service Association, the Jewish Community Federation, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland, the Heights Area Project, and the Cleveland Scholarship Program. Eleanor Rosenfeld married Benjamin Gerson in 1937, and had four children. She was the great-granddaughter of Edward Lazarus and Henrietta Wilmersdorfer Rosenfeld, who had immigrated to New York City from Uhlfeld, Germany in the mid-nineteenth century. Their son, Louis Rosenfeld, married Frederica Fatman, daughter of Joseph Fatman, in 1874. Joseph Fatman and his brother, Aaron, were owners of the firm of Fatman and Company, tobacco dealers. In December 1862, they were among the thirty Jewish merchants ordered out of Paducah, Kentucky, in the Department of the Tennessee by General U.S. Grant's Order Number 11. Eleanor Gerson's parents, Edward Lazarus and Bertha Rosenfeld, moved to Cleveland from New York City in 1925. Edward was an executive in his father-in-law Emanuel Rosenfeld's firm, Grabler Manufacturing Company. He was also active on the boards of many Jewish social service organizations. Bertha Rosenfeld was a founder of the Council of Jewish Women's Jewish Big Sister organization, and was active in other Jewish and women's groups. Bertha's parents, Emanuel and Lena Rosenfeld, came to Cleveland in the 1870s from Germany and were members of Temple Tifereth Israel. Lena Rosenfeld was an active member of the Cleveland Section, National Council of Jewish Women and The Temple's Women's Association. The collection consists of correspondence, legal and genealogical documents, diaries, account books, and newspaper and other clippings of the Rosenfeld, Fatman, and Gerson family members. Of particular interest to Civil War historians are contemporaneous documents relating to General Grant's Order Number 11 which expelled Jews from areas in the jurisdiction of the Department of the Tennessee.

	Abstract:	Arthur J. Naparstek (1939-2004) was a faculty member and administrator at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), serving as Dean from 1983 to 1988. He remained on staff until his death in 2004. His interests were varied, but much of his research and activity focused upon the plight of the urban poor and urban revitalization. Among his professional activities prior to his affiliation with CWRU, Naparstek directed the University of Southern California's Washington (D.C.) Public Affairs Center. He also directed policy and research at Catholic University's Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs and was the Associate Director of Purdue University's Urban Development Institute where he was a key advisor to Gary Hatcher, the first African American mayor of Gary, Indiana. the collection consists of applications, awards, catalogues, correspondence, curricula vitae, lists, minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, proposals, publications, reports, syllabi, transcripts, and writings.

	Abstract:	Maury Feren was born in New York City in 1915 and came to Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of six. A graduate of Glenville High School, he first worked at his father's wholesale produce stand at the Northern Ohio Food Terminal. Following his marriage to Bess Nagelbush, he started his first business, M.B. Feren Produce. The business grew, and in 1951, Feren founded Feren Fruit Basket, a retail gift basket business. He sold both businesses to Fisher Foods in 1968. Feren and his wife then started Fruit Baskets by Maury in 1975; that business was sold in 1990. Feren appeared frequently on radio and television programs from the 1940s to the early 1990s to comment on food and good eating. He also lectured on food, physical fitness, and other topics at local colleges and universities. He volunteered for the American Heart Association, the Cleveland Jewish Welfare Fund, and Cleveland Golden Age Centers. The collection consists of announcements, articles, an autobiography, a booklet, catalogs, certificates, correspondence, newspaper clippings, a resume, a scrapbook, and scripts.

	Abstract:	Herman Goldsmith (1910-1976) was a local political leader in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and collected ephemera related to his interests in sports and Jewish organizations. He was president and co-founder of Cleveland Letter Service, Inc., a direct mail company, and a member of the executive committee of the Cuyahoga County Republican Party. Additionally, Goldsmith served as a councilman in Bentleyville, Ohio. 	Abstract:	Charles Auerbach (1899-1979) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, attorney, educator, and Zionist leader. He was deeply concerned with the state of the legal system, but most of his papers relate to his interest in Jewish Scholarship and Zionist organizations. His wife, Celia, was also active in Zionist organizations. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, and notes on Jewish and legal topics, certificates, bulletins, newspaper clippings, publications, articles and speeches by other individuals, and papers of Hadassah and other Jewish organizations.

	Abstract:	Herman Sziffnagel (1912-2004) and Lory Klaper (1921- ) survived the Holocaust and resettled in Cleveland, Ohio. In October of 1946 the two married in Vienna, and in January of 1948 they immigrated to the United States, taking the name Schiff. The collection consists of an audio tape, correspondence, newspaper articles, passports and immigration documents, and photographs.

	Abstract:	The Katz family began emigrating to the Cleveland area in the 1880s from their home of Podzelva, Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire). The Katzes were very active in the Cleveland Jewish community. Aaron Katz and his son Solomon David prepared a "booklet of remembrance" (a history of their family) in 1905. This "booklet", a large ledger with writing in Biblical Hebrew by Cleveland area scribe Yaacov Landy, was updated with the names of family members through 1913. A composite photograph of individual portraits of over one hundred family members (not part of the ledger) was included in "An American Story", the core exhibit of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, opened in 2005. The collection includes a photocopy of this photograph and a guide to the names of those pictured. The collection consists of the certificate of naturalization of Sam Katz, the Family History, an unusually extensive genealogy, photographs, and a supplement to and translation of the family history.

	Abstract:	Frank E. Joseph, Jr. was a descendant of the Joseph family that arrived in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1872 and later founded the Joseph and Feiss Company. He was an attorney for Hahn, Loeser, Freedheim, Dean & Wellman and president of Bellefaire JCB. He also served on the boards of the American Red Cross, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the Temple-Tifereth Israel, and the Oakwood Club. 	Abstract:	Anshe Chesed is the oldest existing Jewish congregation in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established in 1841 when 30 members seceded from the Israelitic Society of Cleveland. The two congregations merged again in 1845 under the name Israelitic Anshe Chesed Society of Cleveland. It is also popularly known as Fairmount Temple, reflecting its current location on Fairmount Boulevard in Beachwood, Ohio. The collection consists of minutes, reports, bulletins, correspondence, programming records, and publicity materials. Included are the Jordan Band papers, an attorney who served Anshe Chesed as a vice president, member of the Board of Trustees, and in other leadership capacities. Records of the Men's Club and the Sisterhood are also included.

	Abstract:	The Diamond family was a Cleveland, Ohio, family of three brothers who owned and operated the men's clothing chain, Diamond's Men Stores, and was prominent in civic and social activities within the Jewish community of Cleveland. Herbert Diamond was councilman and mayor of Bentleyville, Ohio, 1977 to 1996. Norman Diamond was involved in the Jewish Welfare Fund. Their sons were also involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors, including funding the Diamond Fitness Center and Diamond Scholarship at the Cleveland Jewish Community Center. The collection consists of correspondence, newsletters, awards and certificates, magazine and newspaper articles, Diamond Scholarship records, and photographs, especially of various Diamond's stores from 1952 to 1996, as well as family members.

	Abstract:	Israel Porath was an Orthodox rabbi who served the Cleveland, Ohio, congregations of Oheb Zedek, Neveh Zedek and Heights Jewish Center. He compiled an eight volume study of the Talmud entitled, Mevo ha-Talmud. The collection consists of personal, professional and business correspondence, handwritten notes for talks, lectures and sermons, and published and unpublished articles by and about Israel Porath.

	Abstract:	Leon Weisberg was born to a Jewish family in Jedrzejow, Poland, in 1929, and lived in Sedziszow with his six siblings until the German army invaded Poland in 1939. For the next several years, Weisberg and his family were subjected to the constant horrors of the camps and ghettos of Poland, with Weisberg himself being sent from Sedziszow to Skarzysko-Kamienna to Buchenwald and, finally, to Theresienstadt, where he was liberated by the Russian army in 1945. After the war, Weisberg and his surviving relatives slowly began to immigrate outward and Weisberg immigrated to Cleveland in 1951, working in various businesses as an electrician until his retirement. The collection consists of correspondence, a narrative, notes, photographs, a questionnaire, summaries, and transcripts created as part of Weisberg's oral history interview and the research conducted by the Western Reserve Historical Society on his family's experiences during World War II.

	Abstract:	In 1957 the Committee on Jewish Cemetery Problems was established as part of the Jewish Community Federation in Cleveland, Ohio. The Committee was charged with rehabilitating Baxter Street Cemetery, an old Jewish cemetery in the Slavic Village neighborhood. In 1959, the Jewish Cemeteries Association formed and cooperated with the Federation to renovate cemeteries throughout northeastern Ohio. Other cemetery associations were established throughout the years to protect the interests of individual Jewish cemeteries. The collection consists of agendas, agreements, articles of incorporation, constitutions and by-laws, correspondence, minutes, newspaper clippings, notes, reports, rosters, and statements of policy.
